Angul: A woman in Angul district has set a rare example of women empowerment by solemnising the marriage of her widowed daughter-in-law.
The woman is Pratima Devi, a former sarpanch of Gobara panchayat, and her daughter-in-law is Lili Behera.
According to reports, Lili was earlier married to Pratima’s son, Rashmi Ranjan Behera, who worked as a supervisor at a coalmine in Bharatpur in Talcher district. Rashmi was killed in a landslide at the coalmine on July 23.
Unable to bear the trauma of her daughter-in-law, Pratima convinced Lili to remarry. Pratima then approached her brother, Pranabandhu Behera, in Angul town and proposed the marriage of his son with her widowed daughter-in-law.
Pranabandhu agreed to the proposal and the marriage was solemnised at a Jagannath temple at Rajkishorepada in the town on August 11.
While the people in Angul have praised the mother-in-law for her extraordinary gesture, Pratima said she was mentally relieved with the remarriage of her widowed daughter-in-law.
