Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high at Bharatpur on the outskirts of the city on Sunday when hundreds of aggrieved women ransacked a liquor shop.
The women destroyed all liquor bottles stored inside the shop, alleging that the owner was illegally selling liquor in the area for past few months.
“The shop was affecting lives of local residents as man in an inebriated state would beat their wives and children regularly and commit crime in the area. We had brought the matter to the district officials’ notice but they took no action,” an agitator said.
Meanwhile, police have been deployed at the spot to prevent any untoward incident.
On Saturday, a group of women and children of Pratapur in Ganjam district staged a dharna and blocked Humma-Aska road, demanding immediate closure of liquor selling units in their locality.
