Women’s Rights Activist Karuna Nundy & Business Tycoon Gautam Adani Among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People

Bhubaneswar: Three Indians including a woman lawyer and activist have found place in TIME magazine’s world’s 100 most influential people this year. They include Karuna Nundy, a lawyer, Gautam Adani, business tycoon and Khurram Parvez, a human rights activist.

Karuna has been championing the cause of women’s rights, particularly on sexual crime, in the country. She has been advocating for a strong law against rape and its perpetrators after the infamous Delhi rape case in 2012. The magazine selected her in the prestigious list in recognition of her work in influencing not just laws, but also public ideas of gender, equality and fairness.

“Karuna also takes great pains to explain legal issues in a way that engages the media and public. She can discuss the law simply and deftly. By doing so she creates an accessible discourse about rights in a time when those rights are at risk,” Economic Times quoted the TIME magazine as stating. Forbes Magazine had also named Karuna in its list of ‘Self Made Women 2020’ two years ago.

Gautam Adani, the billionaire businessman and philanthropist also features in this year’s list of most influential persons of TIME magazine in recognition of his companies work on solar and thermal power, consumer goods and infratructure. “Adani Group is now a national behemoth in the world’s sixth largest economy, though Adani stays out of the public eye, quietly building his empire,” said his profile in the magazine.
The third Indian, who finds a place in the list, is detained chairperson of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances Khurram Parvez. “He had to be silenced, for his was a voice that resounded around the globe for his fierce fight against human rights violations and injustices in the Kashmir region,” stated Khurram’s brief sketch written by journalist Rana Ayyub in the magazine. Khurram was arrested in November 2021.
