World Cup: Rain Plays Spoiler, India-New Zealand Match Called Off

The English rain continued to play a spoilsport during the World Cup as the group match between India and New Zealand, the tournament’s only two unbeaten sides, was called off without a ball being bowled at Trent Bridge, London on Thursday.

A soggy outfield following overnight showers had delayed the start. Amid intermittent drizzle, umpires Marais Erasmus and Paul Reiffel inspected the field every hour before deciding to abandon the match in the afternoon.

Both teams have been handed one point each.

Before the India-New Zealand match, the Pakistan-Sri Lanka encounter was washed out. It was a double whammy for Sri Lanka, when its match against Bangladesh at Bristol was also called off without a ball being bowled. Rain also spoiled the match between South Africa and West Indies.

India will next play Pakistan on June 16.
