Jaipur: As many as 2,413 underprivileged couples got married during a mass wedding ceremony at Baran in south-eastern Rajasthan recently.
Guinness World Record (GWR) has acknowledged the May 26 mass marriage as a new record for most number of couples getting married in 12 hours.
The record for most marriages in 24 hours was also rewritten, the previous mark being 963 Yemeni couples in 2013.
According to the GWR website, the mega event saw both Hindu and Muslim weddings being performed.
The mass wedding was organised by Shri Mahaveer Goshala Kalyan Sansthan, a registered trust dedicated to serving the marginalised sections of society.
All couples were directed to assemble at a specific location and they were all married off in less than six hours.
The brides and grooms exchanged garlands and proceeded to the mandap area.
“Each couple had their marriage officiated by a qualified priest or official from their respective community… Hindu priests came from Gayatri parivaar, and the Muslim Quazis were invited from nearby areas,” GWR informed.
Every couple received a marriage certificate from government representatives present at the event.
Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot and Cabinet minister Pramod Jain Bhaya blessed the newly-married couples.
Each couple was given an assortment of gifts including jewellery for the bride, mattress with bedding, kitchen utensils, household appliances like television, refrigerator, cooler and induction cooker, Guinness World Records stated.
Food was also served to all the newly-wed couples and thousands of guests who were in attendance.
