Worst Drought In 40 Years Displaces 1 Million People In This Country

Mogadishu: An extreme drought has displaced over 1 million people in one of the world’s ‘least developed’ countries as per United Nations (UN) classification.

Somalia, the fifth poorest country in our planet, is experiencing the worst drought in more than 40 years with dry conditions prevailing from January 2021, reported Bloomberg.

In 2022 itself, about 755,000 people fled their homes in search of water, UNHCR said in a statement on its website.

The number of Somalians who will face acute hunger crisis is expected to rise from 5 million to 7 million in the next few months, mainly due to rising food prices caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and effects of climate change, said UNHCR.

Drought will most likely be followed by famine as a fifth poor rainy season beckons in the Horn of Africa nation, the UN agency added.
