Cuttack: Days after a 74-year-old man became critical after transfusion of wrong blood group at a private hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack city, four staffers of Central Red Cross Blood Bank here were suspended on Monday for gross negligence.
The patient, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena of Bhagatpur, was admitted to the private hospital after his haemoglobin count fell. The doctors requisitioned for blood following which his family members arranged a unit of A +ve blood from the Central Red Cross Blood Bank. However, Jena’s condition started to deteriorate within minutes of the blood transfusion and he had to be shifted to the ICU. Investigation at the private lab later revealed that the unit brought from the blood bank was B +ve instead of A +ve which was required for the patient.
