Rourkela: Police have arrested another young couple for allegedly duping the people on the plea of providing them jobs in government posts in Rourkela of Odisha’s Sundargarh district.
According to police sources, the fake job racket was basically run by a woman, identified as Laxmi Tanti of Lal Building under Uditnagar police station in the city, while her husband played a passive role.
The couple was arrested after one of their victims lodged a police complaint against them. As per the complaint, Laxmi had promised a youth of Badagaon of giving him job of a clerk in the local court and taken Rs 1.5 lakh four months back.
She also showed some documents including fake employment letters and her identity card to the youth. Believing the papers, the youth, who was working in a private company, quit the job and arranged the money and gave it to Laxmi.
While she continued to delay in giving him the job, Laxmi managed to get more victims through him from Jhirpani, Sundargarh and Badagaon. She also gave them appointment letters supposedly issued by the local courts.
When the aspirants went to the courts in Rourkela and Sundargarh, they were told by the officials that the appointment letters were fake. Realising that they had been duped, they tried to contact Laxmi. On failing to trace her, the youth filed the police complaint.
Following investigation, the police arrested the couple and seized fake appointment letters and identity cards from their possession.
The investigation revealed that the couple had duped around 18 people of more than Rs 20 lakh. Some monetary transactions were made in mobile payment apps.
It may be noted that the police had arrested Hansita Abhilipsa and her aide Anil Mohanty for allegedly duping wealthy people of crores of rupees by posing as kin of high-profile leaders and bureaucrats in Odisha capital.
