The victim identified as Shivram Rout of Sashank village in the district was admitted to Athagarh hospital after sustaining deep injuries on his head and hands.
Adequate numbers of police personnel were deployed at the spot to prevent any untoward incident.
According to locals, some five-seven miscreants armed with sticks and sharp edged weapons attacked Rout in the middle of an agricultural field in the village and fled the spot.
“A person has been detained in connection with the case. The matter is under investigation. However, it is suspected that the attack was the fallout of a political rivalry as similar incidents of election-related violence were reported from the village in the recent past”, a police officer informed.
