Cuttack: A youth was allegedly beaten to death near Chatri Pokhari in Odisha’s Cuttack district late on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Sumanta Sahu, a resident of Ratagarh village under Banki police limits.
According to sources, the incident took place when Sumanta was returning home after attending Makara Mela (fair) at Bada Bandiani Thakurani temple in Tigiria, He was waylaid by around 11-12 individuals, who hurled abuses at him leading to a confrontation. Following which it took an ugly turn with a coordinated attack with sticks on Sumanta, whom they then left bleeding on the road. The victim’s mother and sister rushed him to Cuttack’s SCB Medical College and Hospital, in a desperate attempt to save him, but the doctors declared him brought dead.
While attributing the attack on previous enmity, Sumanta’s mother, Susama Sahu, has lodged a complaint with Banki police station, which reached the village and detained six persons for questioning in connection with the incident.
