Jajpur: Police have arrested a youth for allegedly beating an old woman to death in a village of Odisha’s Jajpur district.
According to sources, the youth, identified as Bipin Bihari Jena of Tarakote village under Korei police station, had old rivalry with the family of Chandramani Jena and his wife Sanjukta Jena of the same village. On Monday morning, when Sanjukta had gone to fetch water from a tubewell in the village, Bipin confronted her.
As Sanjukta retaliated, Bipin pushed her and she fell down on the ground near the tubewell. Then Bipin took a wooden plank and beat her up mercilessly. When the villagers tried to prevent Bipin from assaulting Sanjukta, he attacked them.
On hearing the hue and cry, more villagers gathered at the spot and overpowered agitated Bipin. Later, they handed him over to police.
The villagers rushed Sanjukta to local hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. The police have detained Bipin and launched investigation.
