Phulbani: Police claimed to have cracked the murder case of Kandhamal district BJD youth wing vice-president Sanjit Kumar Mallick with the arrest of a woman with whom he allegedly had an illicit affair.
Body of Sanjit, who was the son of Dadaki sarpanch, was found in the government quarters of a Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) last month.
Addressing a presser Sadar SDPO Suprasanna Mallick said that accused has confessed to have suffocated him to death using a pillow for allegedly forcing her to keep a physical relationship with him by blackmailing her. “The investigation revealed that that he was in an illicit relationship with the married woman for the last 1-2 years,” he said.
The SDPO further said that the relationship turned sour as the deceased refused to return the money he had taken from her and also threatened to circulate her intimate pictures and videos. “The woman alleged that he was forcing her to keep a physical relationship with him against her will and therefore, decided to eliminate her. On the fateful night, she asked Sanjit to come to the PEO’s residence and asphyxiated him when in an inebriated condition. She later took his phone and buried it at an isolated place,” he said.
The accused has confessed to the crime and the phone has been retrieved and sent for verification of call details and chat history, he added.
