Bhubaneswar: The family of a youth, who died while undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in an attack by some miscreants, staged a demonstration in Bhubaneswar on Monday alleging police negligence in arresting the accused.
According to sources, the 17-yer-old youth identified as Prakash Kumar Sahu of Baramunda, sustained critical injuries after he was attacked by the miscreants with a cricket bat around 3 months back. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in the city.
A case was registered regarding the assault at Khandagiri police station. Following investigation, the police had arrested two persons on July 10 while others managed to get anticipatory bail from the Orissa High Court.
Meanwhile, Prakash succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment in the hospital. His death led the family to stage the demonstration at Khandagiri square on Monday. They alleged that the police deliberately neglected in the investigation which enabled the accused to get bail. They also claimed that the police had not recorded the dying statement of Prakash.
The police, on the other hand, said with the death of Prakash, the assault case has now turned into murder case and they were processing the case accordingly. They also claimed that the investigating officer had recorded the statement of Prakash after obtaining the permission from the hospital
Tapas Pradhan, ACP, Zone 3, said, “We will move the court to cancel the bail of other accused as it has become a murder case. After registering the case, necessary action will be taken against them.”
