Bhubaneswar: Hours after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the much-delayed overbridge at Lingaraj Road here, a youth was electrocuted after coming in contact with electric wires used for decoration purpose.
The deceased was identified as Simachal Panda, a native of Ganam and staying at Sunderpada area here. He came in contact with live wire while removing balloons on the electric poles used for decorating the bridge, sources said.
He was immediately rushed to the Capital Hospital in a critical condition. He, however, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Expressing grief over the incident, the Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kin of the deceased.
Work on the rail overbridge had begun in 2012. After a series of delay, it was completed in the first week of this month. The 653-metre bridge has been constructed at a cost of Rs 32.55 crore, the sources added.
