Cuttack: A man was arrested for allegedly duping a woman of gold ornaments in Odisha’s Cuttack city after establishing contact with her through a marriage website.
The woman, who had got herself in a matrimonial site to find a life partner, said that she met the accused after getting a call from him. The man had identified himself as an officer in the Income Tax department.
During the conversation, the youth learned that she was planning to take a loan from a bank by mortgaging gold. He then assured the woman that he would give cash in lieu of gold ornaments, she told media.
Though the youth took away the ornaments on the pretext of weighing it and bringing cash, he never came back and his mobile phone was also found switched off, she claimed.
Finding no other option, the woman lodged a complaint with the police and the man, identified as Sudhanshu Behera of Kalyaninagar area of the city, was arrested, police said.
Police have also recovered 30 grams of gold ornaments which he had taken from the victim on the pretext of giving her cash.
