Puri: A young man from Bhadrak district was brutally murdered near Swargadwar cremation ground in Odisha’s Puri late on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Ranjan Das of Apanda village under Bonth police limits in Bhadrak district.
According to source
s, Ranjan had traveled to Puri with friends for cremation of an elderly relative. However, a scuffle erupted between him and two of his friends, one among them identified as Manas Ranjan Nayak, while they were picking tender coconuts required for the ceremony at Chaitanya Chhak. Tanmay of Balisahi in the town, who was passing by, intervened but was instead attacked by the trio. He then allegedly attacked Ranjan with a knife, slashing his neck. Manas also sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital in a critical condition.
Sea Beach police have detained Tanmay for questioning and also probing the possibility of involvement of others in the attack.
