Salepur: Two persons were killed and as many injured when a miscreant opened fire on them at Katikata market under Nischintkoili police limits in Salepur block of Odisha’s Cuttack district late on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Sheikh Imran of Patasaila village and Raghunath Mallick of Bhola village.
According to sources, a melody night was organised at Katikata market on the occasion of the golden jubilee celebration of Kartikeswar Puja Committee when Imran had an altercation with a youth. Some locals tried to pacify them, but the youth suddenly opened three rounds of fire on Imran.
Imran died on the spot with one bullet piercing his neck, while three others—Nityananda Mallick of Banamalipur village and Uttam Das and Raghunath Mallick of Bhola village— also sustained bullet injuries.
While Nityananda was hit in his right thigh, Uttam and Raghunath sustained injuries in the lower waist and stomach respectively. The trio was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where Raghunath succumbed to the injuries at the hospital on Thursday morning.
“Efforts are on to nab the accused, who fled the area after the incident,” IIC of Nischintkoili police station, Shubhranshu Sekhar Parida said.
