Nabarangpur: Police on Sunday arrested three youths on charges of stealing money from the bank account of their friend in the district.
According to sources, Niranjan Semli of BM Semla village under Papadahandi police limits found his ATM card of State Bank of India missing on October 17. When he went to an SBI branch in the locality for enquiry, he was told that Rs 1.10 lakh was withdrawn from his account. He lodged a complaint at Kodinga police station on October 23.
On the basis of the complaint, IIC of Kodinga police station formed a team to investigate. The team scanned the CCTV footage of nearby ATM counters and came to know that Niranjan’s three friends had withdrawn the cash, said Papadahandi sub-divisional police officer Aditya Sen.
Later, police raided the house of Niranjan’s friend Jaydas Hial of his village and recovered Rs 30,000. Jaydas’ two accomplices were arrested from Malkangiri and Rs 50,00 was recovered from them.
According to information revealed by the accused trio during interrogation, Jaydas knew the password of Niranjan’s ATM card. He stole Niranjan’s ATM card and along with two of his associates withdrew Rs 20,000 from his account at an ATM counter at Kodinga on September 24.
Subsequently, they continued withdrawing the cash from Niranjan’s bank account totalling Rs 1.10 lakh.
A case has been registered in this regard and the accused have been forwarded to court.
