India Summons Canada Envoy As Khalistan Slogans Raised In Presence Of PM Justin Trudeau

New Delhi: Indo-Canada relations hit a low after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested last year that Indian agents were possibly involved in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia, an allegation vehemently denied by New Delhi.

More than six months have passed, but undercurrents still exist.

In the latest episode, India on Monday summoned Canadian Deputy High Commissioner over raising of separatist slogans on ‘Khalistan’ at an event attended by Trudeau.

“The Government of India’s deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event. This illustrates once again the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and violence,” a Ministry of External Affairs statement said.

“Their continued expressions not only impact India-Canada relations but also encourage a climate of violence and criminality in Canada to the detriment of its own citizens,” the statement added.

‘Khalistan Zindabad’ slogans were heard at Sunday’s Khalsa Day celebrations in Toronto where Trudeau and Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre were present

In a video released by Canada-based CPAC TV, the chants were heard getting louder till Trudeau took the stage and commenced his speech.
