In an advisory to the public on Monday, the TPCODL said efficient use of electricity holds significance during the summer. “The surge in power demand during this period often leads to various challenges such as fuse blowing, cable and joint failures and transformer overloading, resulting in power interruptions and inconvenience for all,” it said.

These issues are compounded by unauthorised hooking from power lines, further straining the electrical network and creating hot spots, which can ultimately lead to breakdowns and safety hazards.

“It’s crucial to understand that unauthorised hooking is not only illegal under Section 135 of the Indian Electricity Act, 1956, but also poses significant risks to public safety and causes losses to the community,” said the TPCODL, a joint venture of Tata Power and the Odisha government.

“In light of these circumstances, it is essential for each of us to exercise prudence and responsibility in our electricity consumption. Let’s prioritise essential usage, avoid wastage and embrace energy-efficient practices to alleviate pressure on the grid,” the advisory said.

“We appeal to the consumers to refrain from any unauthorized activities related to electricity consumption and join hands with us in upholding electricity regulations and safeguarding our community,” it added.
