Kolkata: Stoking memories of the deadly incident at New Delhi railway station in February, at least 10 people were injured in a scary mishap at another station in the country.
This time, a stampede broke out at Bardhaman railway station on Sunday evening amid a heavy rush of passengers, Railways officials said. Six of the seriously injured persons, including men and women, have been admitted to Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, the stampede ensued at a time when three passengers trains were waiting on platform Nos 4, 6 and 7 simultaneously. In their hurry to catch their respective trains, passengers rushed up and down the stairs of the foot overbridge connecting platforms 4 and 6.
The narrow flight of stairs got quickly overcrowded, and as the pressure of crowd kept increasing, panic set in and triggered a stampede.
Several passengers fell during the commotion and chaos, and were trampled by others trying to move through the dense crowd.
Panic and confusion spread through the station as scared passengers ran helter skelter to find a safer zone.

Thankfully, the situation didn’t turn as grave as at New Delhi station where 18 people were killed and many injured as passengers rushed to board trains for the Mahakumbh Mela on February 17.
Railway rescue and relief teams reached the spot to extend help to the injured persons.
