10-kg Ovarian Tumour Removed

Bhubaneswar: A 10-kg ovarian tumour was removed from a lady following a surgery at a private hospital here, said a release on Tuesday.

Noted Gynaec Laparoscopic and infertility specialist Dr G S S Mohapatra removed the tumour, measuring 38 cm by 36 cm, on a 28-year-old woman here at AMRI Hospitals Bhubaneswar.

The patient was complaining of loss of weight, weakness, abnormal fullness after eating, with an increased urge to urinate. Doctor detected a huge tumour and decided to do the surgery. If left untreated, the tumor could have spread to other parts of the body.

Health sector insiders said the incidence of ovarian carcinoma is approximately 15 cases per 100,000 women per year. Ovarian cancer has emerged as one of the most common malignancies affecting women in India. Gynecological cancers are among the most common cancers in women and hence an important public health issue. Due to the lack of cancer awareness, variable pathology, and dearth of proper screening facilities in developing countries such as India, most women report at advanced stages, adversely affecting the prognosis and clinical outcomes. Ovarian cancer has emerged as one of the most common malignancies affecting women in India and has shown an increase in the incidence rates over the years. Basically a woman should routinely do a pelvic ultrasound every year especially after the age of 40 to detect any pathology very early. Never ignore if one has any such detectable pathology on ultrasound and go for further tests like CECT of abdomen and markers like CA125.

It was a difficult and critical surgery because the mass was densely adherent to intestine and ureters. The meticulous dissection, surgical precision and skill helped in finishing the surgery and the patient is doing fine now.
