Sundargarh: A freight train carrying limestone derailed near the Upper Market area of Biramitrapur in Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Saturday.
No one was injured in the mishap that took place while the goods train was proceeding towards Biramitrapur railway station from Chuna Bhata.
Sources said the train loaded with dolomite stones suddenly went off-track, resulting in the derailment of 11 wagons.
While the exact cause of the mishap was yet to be ascertained, preliminary reports indicated that the derailment may have been caused by a track alignment issue or mechanical failure.
A high-level inquiry has been launched into the mishap and senior railway officials have rushed to the site for assessment.
Emergency response teams, including railway maintenance staff and security personnel, arrived promptly to secure the area and begin restoration work. Heavy machinery has been deployed to lift the derailed wagons and clear the tracks.
Train movement on nearby routes has been temporarily affected, and efforts are being made to resume normal operations at the earliest.
