Bhubaneswar: Commuters across Bhubaneswar faced hardship on Monday as public transport services under Ama Bus initiative were severely disrupted due to a protest by drivers, guides, and other staff at Bhagabanpur Depot.
According to reports, 117 buses operating on 45 routes remained off the roads from early morning, leaving thousands of daily passengers, including office-goers and students, struggling to find alternative means of travel, particularly during peak hours. The agitation began around 4 am at Patrapada, where employees gathered to voice their grievances.
Staff alleged that their salaries had not been paid for over two months, with payments routed through third-party agencies contributing to repeated delays. In addition to timely disbursal of wages, the protesters demanded the proper implementation of EPF and ESI benefits, along with enhanced safety measures for bus guides and improved working conditions.
Rourkela had witnessed similar protests, where services were fully suspended over salary hikes and EPF issues.
The Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), which operates the bus service, is yet to issue any official statement regarding the latest protest. While officials were seen attempting to pacify the protesting employees, the latter have made it clear that their agitation will continue until all pending dues are cleared and their demands are met.
Commuters expressed frustration over the lack of reliable public transport, urging authorities to address the root causes to prevent future inconveniences in the capital city.
