New Delhi: Meerut Police have reportedly filed a case against Vivo after finding out that more than 10,000 mobile sets of the Chinese smartphone maker were operating with the same International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number.
The IMEI number is a unique identification or serial number of a mobile phone which is printed on the box, inside the phone and can also be found out by dialing *#06#.
The case, filed under Section 420 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), came to light when a police personnel went to a service centre in Delhi to get his Vivo phone replaced. He noticed that the IMEI number on the device and the box did not match.
A five-month long investigation revealed that as many as 13,500 Vivo phones were running on the same IMEI number. The devices were found to be active in different states across the country.
Vivo is yet to comment on the issue.
