Surat: News of death is never pleasant. But when you hear that a 15-day-old infant has succumbed to coronavirus, nothing can be more heart-breaking and painful.
The incident happened at a hospital in Surat, one of Gujarat’s worst-affected cities.
The baby girl is perhaps the youngest to die of COVID-19 in India, as per records with Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
According to a statement issued by Diamond Hospital, the baby was born with coronavirus infection on April 1, as her mother had also contracted the virus.
The mother was shifted to another hospital, while the baby underwent intensive treatment. As her condition started deteriorating, she was administered Remdesivir injection, the hospital said. She had to be put on ventilator support but breathed her last on Thursday night.
It was reported that former Surat mayor Dr Jagdish Patel, who recently recovered from coronavirus, had donated his blood plasma for the treatment of the baby. But the Almighty had other ideas.
Gujarat reported 8,152 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, of which Surat accounted for 1,551.
