Puri: Despite the Odisha government’s direction to CDVOs to remove stray dogs from the streets, at least 17 persons including children were injured due to dog bite in Puri district on Tuesday.
As per reports, a dog strayed into Chupurungi village under Kanas block in the district and ran after the villagers to bite them. When some villagers tried to chase it away, the dog bit them. In the process, 17 villagers sustained injuries and underwent treatment in the local hospital.
As panic spread in the area, some villagers armed with sticks, stones and farm equipment chased the dog and drove it away from the village.
It may be noted that a stray dog attacked more than 30 people at Pathan Mahala in Balasore district in December last year. This came days after a pet dog was sent to an animal shelter after he bit and badly injured an 8-year-old boy in Bhubaneshwar.
Following the death of a five-year-old boy after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Hyderabad, Odisha’s Animal Resources Development Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain had directed chief district veterinary officers (CDVOs) to remove all stray dogs from the streets on February 23 this year.
