Thane: At least 18 patients have died in a span of 24 hours at the government-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial (CSMM) Hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane.
Civic commissioner Abhijit Bangar informed that 10 of the deceased were women and 8 men. Six of the victims were from Thane city, 4 from Kalyan, 3 from Sahapur, 1 each from Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar and Govandi (in Mumbai), 1 from unidentified location, while another patient remains unidentified.
There was no common cause of the deaths as the deceased patients were suffering from various complications ranging from kidney stones, chronic paralysis, ulcers, pneumonia, kerosene poisoning, to septicemia, informed Bangar.
“The line of treatment will be probed and statements of kin of the deceased will be recorded. Allegations of negligence levelled by some kin is a serious matter, which the probe committee will look into,” PTI quoted Bangar as saying.
Thane Municipal Corporation officials have been directed to analyse the situation, including an in-depth review of records.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Gawde said the hospital management said some of the patients arrived in a critical stage and succumbed during treatment.
“Some were elderly. We have increased police presence at the hospital to avoid any untoward incident due to these high number of deaths,” said Gawde.
According to PTI, some doctors are down with dengue, which has adversely affected the hospital’s functioning.
