New Delhi: A video in which a young man is smiling and waving to the camera while being escorted by a police officer in the courtroom became viral on social media on Thursday. Initially, it was difficult to understand the reason for his happy bearing while in police custody. On Friday, the story turned out to be a case of revenge and murder.
The 19-year-old man, Lovepreet Singh, was arrested for avenging his sister’s rape by killing the rapist ten years after the incident.
Singh’s sister was raped in 2015 and the perpetrator of the crime, Omkar Singh, was sentenced to a 10-year jail term. However, the rapist was released early due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
As per the details available, Lovepreet and his friend Akashdeep attacked Omkanr Singh with a sharp weapon in Punjab’s Kapurthala on August 28. Akashdeep was arrested soon after the incident, while Lovepreet remained at large for a while before being arrested.
Police discovered Omkar Singh’s body near Vishanpur Jatta village. After investigation, they found out about his conviction for rape. They also learnt that the rape victim and her father had passed away in the intervening period.
Police registered an FIR based on the statements provided by the deceased’s son and arrested Lovepreet and Akashdeep. The court has remanded Lovepreet in police custody for further questioning.
