New Delhi: Former Indian cricket star Yuvraj Singh appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday for questioning in connection with a probe being conducted by the central agency into the activities of the illegal betting app 1xBet.
Yuvraj and others are being questioned about their alleged association with promotional activities linked to the betting platform.
1xBet has been under the central agency’s scanner for suspected violations of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). On September 16, the ED issued summons against Yuvraj and another former cricketer Robin Uthappa. They were summoned to record their statements under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Officials confirmed that Yuvraj reached the ED’s office on Tuesday, nearly an hour behind schedule. The agency had summoned him to join the probe as part of its wider investigation into money laundering and the promotion of the app in India.
Businessman Anvesh Jain also appeared before the ED on Tuesday along with Yuvraj, India Today has reported.
The agency has questioned several prominent personalities in connection with the 1xBet app probe. They include former cricketers Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan, actor Anjali Arora, former Trinamool Congress MP and actor Mimi Chakraborty, as well as actor Ankush Hazara.
Actor Sonu Sood has also been directed to appear before the ED on Wednesday in connection with this case. Actor Urvashi Rautela is known to have skipped her summons earlier this month.
According to officials, the ED is trying to ascertain whether the celebrities and cricketers who promoted the app violated the PMLA knowingly, by endorsing a platform linked to unlawful financial activities.
