Konark: Two persons died and as many were injured when the car in which they were travelling plunged into a pond near Junei Square in Odisha’s Konark late on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as software engineer Sanatan Senapati of Dantuni village in Balasore’s Jaleswar and law student Sandeep Mohapatra of Guhalapada in Puri’s Nimapara. They were in their 20s.
According to sources, the accident took place around 1 am when Sandeep, who was on the wheels, was trying to negotiate a stationary roller compactor on an under-construction road amid a thick blanket of fog but lost balance over the vehicle, which then swerved and plunged into a roadside pond.
On being informed, Fire Services personnel rushed to the spot and rushed all four passengers in an ambulance to Gop Community Health Centre, where doctors declared two of them dead. The condition of the injured, Manish Senapati and Papun Parida both from Balasore, is stated to be stable.
Sources said that Sanatan along with his brother Manish had gone to Nimapara from where they along with the two others went to Konark. They were en route to Bhubaneswar when the accident occurred. Sanatan and Sandeep were to appear for a law exam in Puri this morning.
Police have seized the car and investigating the matter.
