Angul: Three persons, including two minors, have been arrested for alleged gangrape of a woman in Odisha’s Angul district.
Ranjan Kumar Mukhi (22) of Baramancha village has been identified as the prime accused.
According to the police, the incident took place on August 3 when the woman, along with her nephew, was returning to Barmancha from Chhendipada on a motorcycle after visiting a relative. They stopped near Charibati at around 3 pm to have lunch and refuel the bike. The woman then went into a nearby forest to relieve herself. Some daily wage workers passing by on a tractor spotted her, stopped their vehicle, and three of them allegedly gang-raped her in the forest, according to Angul SP Rahul Jain.
The survivor lodged a complaint at Bagdia police station on Tuesday, following which three teams were formed under the direct supervision of the SP and the accused were nabbed from Bagedia following raids on Wednesday. They have reportedly confessed to the crime.
Police have also seized the tractor, mobile phones and the apparel which the accused were wearing at the time of the crime and biological exhibits.
The incident has been designated as a “Red Flag” case and the charge-sheet will be filed within 30 days. The Angul police said they will request the court for a fast-tracked trial to ensure swift and severe punishment for the perpetrators.
