Jharsuguda: Two persons allegedly involved in the rape of a minor girl in Belpahar area of Odisha’s Jharsuguda district were injured after being shot by police while attempting to escape.
As per information, the accused identified as Sheikh Asif and Abhishek Barik were being taken to be forwarded to court when they attacked the police personnel and tried to snatch firearm in a bid to flee from custody.
Police claimed that they were forced to open fire after the accused tried to escape despite being issued warnings. Both the accused sustained bullet injuries in their legs in the incident that took place on Belpahar-Jharsuguda road.
The two were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) In Jharsuguda for treatment. Their condition was stated to be stable.
The accused persons face multiple charges, including making death threats against a minor’s family.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the confrontation is being led by the region’s Inspector General (IG) of Police along with local law enforcement agencies.
