Berhampur: Two students of Odisha’s Berhampur city have been awarded first prize at 2nd United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress (UNWGIC) held in Hyderabad.
Aditya Ratha, Class XII student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Berhampur and Nigam Das, Class IX student of Government High School Medical Campus, Berhampur had submitted their project titled “Chilika- The Provider”, based on SDG-5 (Gender Equality) and SDG-8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
As a team, both Aditya and Nigam secured 1st position while their project on transformation in localising the SDGs through spatial thinking was highly appreciated by the jury. The students prepared the project under the guidance of Dr Prabhati Kumari Mahapatro, Headmistress of Government High School Medical Campus.
The students were presented the prize and certificate in the concluding session of UNWGIC which was attended by around 160 countries from across the world on Friday.
The theme of UNWGIC was “Geo-enabling the Global Village: No one should be left behind.” As many as 18 schools from across India with a team of two students from each school presented their use of geospatial data in understanding a local issue and its use in planning and implementing a change project in the community-truly localising the implementation of the SDGs through spatial thinking.
The event was organised by the BVIEER University Pune in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology of the Central government.
