Deogarh: Two women died after being attacked by a wild elephant at a village in a forest area of Odisha’s Deogarh district.
According to reports, the incident took place at Tipirisingha village under Laimura section of Deogarh Forest Division on Friday night. The deceased were identified as Surubali Kisan (43) and Khairi Kisan (19).
Sources the wild elephant entered the house after breaking the wall when the victims were asleep. The women raised an alarm and tried to escape, but the elephant chased them down and trampled both to death.
On being informed about the incident, Forest department officials reached the spot and launched an investigation into the jumbo attack. The bodies of the women were recovered and sent for postmortem.
The locals demanded adequate compensation for the family members of the deceased.
It may be noted here that several parts of the state have been witnessing elephant menace in recent past. Two youths were trampled to death by two wild elephants in separate incidents in Bargarh district in December last year.
Two others were also killed in an attack by a wild elephant at Jaritapur under Khordha’s Tangi block in the same month.
