New Delhi: An Indian student, hailing from Karnataka’s Haveri, has died in Russian shelling in Kharkiv this morning, the Ministry of External Affairs said Tuesday.
“With profound sorrow, we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family.”
“Foreign Secretary calling in Ambassadors of Russia & Ukraine to reiterate our demand for urgent safe passage for Indian nationals, who are still in Kharkiv and cities in other conflict zones,” MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi added.
According to sources, the 4th-year student of Kharkiv Medical University, Naveen Shekharappa, was out to buy groceries when Russia began shelling on the Governor House in the city. The 21-year-old was standing in the queue for food and was killed after an airstrike blew up Governor’s House.
Around 3000-4000 Indians are still stranded in Kharkiv, she added.
Notably, the Indian embassy in Ukraine had issued an advisory asking citizens to urgently leave the capital Kyiv, earlier today.
