Shillong: This surely belongs to the believe it or not category!
A team of surgeons removed a tumour weighing 24 kg – you heard it right, 24 kg — from the abdomen of a woman at a Meghalaya hospital on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old woman, from Jamge village in East Garo Hills district, was admitted to the Tura Maternity and Child Hospital on July 29 after developing severe abdominal pain.
According to hospital Superintendent Dr Icylda Sangma, a team of doctors including two gynaecologists conducted the surgical procedure lasting three hours on August 3.
She added that the patient is stable and under medical observation, and that the tumour has been sent for biopsy.
Complimenting the doctors, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted: “A team of Doctors of the Tura District Maternity and Child Hospital (DMCH) successfully removed a 24kg Tumour from the abdomen of a patient from East Garo Hills. I congratulate Dr Vince Momin and the Team for the successful operation and I wish the patient a speedy recovery.”
One of the doctors donated blood to the patient while community members provided financial assistance for the surgery to go ahead.
