Jajpur: Three police personnel have been suspended after an accused in a theft case escaped from custody at Brahmabarada police station in Jajpur district of Odisha.
Sources said Superintendent of Police of Jajpur Yashpratap Shrimal suspended placed the three under suspension following an inquiry into the incident.
The incident took place late on Friday night when the accused, identified as Ashish Behera of Chandamohini village, fled from the police lock-up. He had been arrested earlier in connection with a theft incident at a medical facility in Kundapatana in the area.
After escaping from custody, the accused allegedly stole a laptop from the police station and a motorcycle from nearby, and attempted to flee. During his escape, Behera reportedly met with an accident, leaving one person injured. However, he abandoned the two-wheeler and escaped from the spot.
SDPO of Jajpur Road Sarat Chandra Patra visited the police station following the incident and initiated an inquiry. Based on the probe report, the SP ordered the suspension of three personnel – an Assistant Sub-Inspector and two constables – for negligence.
A hunt has been launched to trace and apprehend the absconding accused. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the security breach.
