Dhenkanal: Several workers were feared killed in a major explosion at a stone quarry near Gopalpur village in Motanga area of Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.
As per preliminary information, the explosion occurred on Saturday night when at least four workers were engaged in routine quarrying work at the site.
While there was no official confirmation about any casualties in the incident, the powerful blast was suspected to have claimed some lives. The incident caused widespread concern among locals and authorities.
Following the explosion, a portion of soil reportedly collapsed inside the quarry. Officials expressed concern that workers present during the blast might be trapped under debris. Search and rescue operation was underway.
On being informed about the incident, the Odapada Tehsildar and police team from Motanga rushed to the site and initiated an investigation.
The entire quarry area was cordoned off and movement of people restricted as a safety measure. Senior officials, including the inspector-in-charge of Motanga police station, remained at the site through the night to assess the situation and gather preliminary details.
Preliminary inquiry showed that the quarry did not have valid permission to carry out blasting operations. The district mining office had issued a notice to the leaseholder on September 8, 2025, directing the closure of the quarry due to the absence of blasting clearance.
Despite the directive, blasting activities were reportedly carried out, leading to the explosion.
