Bhubaneswar: The state government has decided to open four more departments in Acharya Harihar Post-Graduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC) in Odisha’s Cuttack city.
According to a notification of Health and Family Welfare department, the four departments will be opened for the benefit of students of the Institute. The new departments are gastroenterology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, palliative medicine and uro-oncology.
At least one unit will be opened in each department initially, the notification said adding that the Finance department has already extended its approval to the new facility.
It may be noted that the government had accorded approval on May 9 for enhancement of the existing bed strength in the state’s premier cancer hospital after considering the present work load and future expansion of the institute. It proposed to increase the number of beds from 281 to 507.
According to official sources, at least 350 patients visit the hospital to avail radiation treatment and 500 patients for cancer treatment every day.
