New Delhi: A fresh round of deportation to India is on the cards after authorities in the United States identified 487 more illegal migrants living in the country.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said at a press conference on Friday that the US has notified New Delhi about these Indian nationals who have been issued removal orders.

“We’ve been told there are 487 presumed Indian citizens with final removal orders,” Misri said.

Earlier this week, an American military plane landed in Amritsar with 104 Indians who were residing illegally in the US.

There was a massive uproar, including in Parliament, after images of the illegal immigrants in handcuffs and leg restraints surfaced, prompting questions about the standard operation procedures.

After Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India is engaging with the United States to ensure that those being deported are not mistreated, the Foreign Secretary noted that the Central government will continue to address the issue to ensure their dignity and safety throughout the deportation process.

“On the issue of mistreatment, it is a valid issue to raise and we continue to emphasise to US authorities that there should be no mistreatment of deportees… We will continue to take up any instances of mistreatment that come to our attention. Action needs to be taken across the system against the underlying ecosystem that thrives on promoting illegal immigration,” Misri stated.
