Bhubaneswar: Police on Monday arrested six persons, including two women, in connection with the alleged attack on Ashok Maharana over property dispute at Banadurga slum in Bharatpur area of Odisha capital last night.
Speaking to the media, Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena said that there was a dispute between Ashok and his elder brother, Surya Maharana, over their parental property. “Two cases were earlier registered in this connection at Bharatpur police station on complaints lodged by their respective wives. Multiple meetings were also held to resolve the issue. However, last night Surya along with his family members suddenly attacked Ashok, leaving him with a fractured hand,” he said.
The DCP said that police then received a call on 112 and they responded immediately. “When cops attempted to take Surya and his family members into custody, locals, who were equally pissed off with the family, surrounded them. The locals then attacked the police as they tried to rescue them from their clutches. A window screen of a police vehicle was damaged and three cops were injured in the incident,” he said.
Meena identified those arrested as Surya Maharana, his wife Aarti, his sons, Manoj and Akshaya, his daughter-in-law Rashmita Nayak and his brother-in-law Rakesh Kumar Nayak.
The DCP also informed about one more arrest in the March 27 rioting incident, taking the total to three. He identified him as Prateek Das of Sailashree Vihar. “Earlier, we had arrested Mirza Islam Baig and Chandan Sahu. Efforts are on to nab others involved in the stone pelting incident,” he added.
