Bhubaneswar: At least six workers were killed and several others injured in an accident at a granite quarry in Andhra Pradesh’s Bapatla district on on Sunday.
All six deceased are migrant workers from Odisha, reported NDTV.
The tragedy unfolded at the Satyakrishna Granite Quarry, near Ballikurava, when a large portion of a rock face collapsed.
According to police officials, 16 workers were present at the site when the rockslide took place. Six workers were crushed to death and 10 others seriously injured.
Four bodies have been retrieved, and rescue operations are underway to recover the bodies of two other workers who are believed to be trapped under the debris.
The injured workers were transported to Narasaraopet Government Hospital. Among them, the condition of four workers is said to be critical.
Bapatla Superintendent of Police Tushar Dudi is overseeing the rescue and recovery efforts.
Inadequate safety measures at the quarry may have led to the accident, according to preliminary investigation.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has expressed his condolence over the mishap, and ordered a thorough inquiry into the cause of the accident. He has directed officials to ensure that the injured workers receive the best possible medical care.
