New Delhi: At least 60 were killed in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi-NCR with thunderstorm and rain lashing several states on Sunday evening.
Uttar Pradesh saw around 38 deaths while 50 were injured. According to government sources, most of the damage occurred at Kasgaj where 6 persons were crushed to death under uprooted trees and in wall collapse.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered district administration to distribute relief material among the affected.
West Bengal, too, was hit by lightning that led to death of around 12 persons. Around 115 were injured and some admitted to hospitals.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said government will provide assistance to the families of the deceased. “We do not have control over the nature. We will not be able to bring back those who have died but our government will be beside these families and help them in every possible manner,” she added.
In Andhra Pradesh, deaths toll rose to nine in Srikakulam and Kadaja districts. Two persons were killed in squall and dust storm killed two and injured 18. The wind blowing at the speed of 109 kmph uprooted several trees.
It also affected flights, rail and metro operations at these places.
