Patna: At least 61 people lost their lives across Bihar due to inclement weather as the state was battered by heavy lightning strikes and hailstorms, PTI reported on Friday.

According to the state’s Disaster Management department, 39 people died due to hailstorms and rain-related incidents, while 22 others were killed due to lightning strikes on Thursday.

Nalanda district reported 23 fatalities, followed by Bhojpur (6), Siwan, Gaya, Patna and Sheikhpura (4 each), Jamui (3) and Jehanabad (2).

Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Arwal, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Saharsa, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Nawada, and Bhagalpur all reported one death each.

The inclement weather continued on Friday, when an Orange alert was issued by the India Meteorological Department in a number of districts.

According to Disaster Minister Vijay Mandal, the death toll has reached 80 in the state.

Compensation of Rs 4 lakh announced

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each of the families of the deceased.

For Saturday, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind has been forecast at some places in south-east Bihar, Katihar and Supaul districts, while on Sunday and Monday, similar weather conditions are likely at a few places in some districts of eastern Bihar.

Bihar was the worst affected, but states like Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand were also affected by the storms and lightning strikes.

22 killed in UP

Twenty-two people died in Uttar Pradesh in different rain-related incidents across 15 districts. Fatehpur and Azamgarh reported three deaths each, while two deaths each occurred in Firozabad, Kanpur Dehat, and Sitapur.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to expedite relief measures and ensure compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin. Yogi also called for assessment of crop losses, safe storage of wheat, and immediate water drainage in waterlogged areas.
