83% Restaurants In Country Shut Shop During Pandemic: Survey

New Delhi: A whopping 83% of dine-in restaurants in the country have stopped operating due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a survey by leading food delivery company Zomato.

Of these, 10 per cent restaurants have shut down permanently and 30 per cent more are unlikely to reopen even after the pandemic is over, the survey report released on Wednesday said.

“The remaining 43 per cent, which are closed right now, are likely to open as the situation becomes better,” it added.

The report also said that the dinning industry is operating at just 8-10% of the gross merchandise value (GMV) from pre-pandemic levels.

“Nearly 60 per cent restaurateurs said they estimate to retain less than half of their original business volumes for a few months even post-COVID,” the report said.

The survey commenced on August 1 covering over 15,000 restaurants in the country, with over 1,000 restaurants in each city to understand the current state and future outlook of the industry, said a Zomato spokesperson.
