Forest Guard Suspended After ‘Trapped’ Elephant Calf Found Dead In Odisha

Rourkela: A day after a carcass of an elephant calf was recovered from Rutukepedi forest under Kuanrmunda range in Sundargarh district, the authorities on Saturday suspended Balanda forest guard and issued a show-cause notice to Kuanrmunda ranger and Kalunga forester for allegedly suppressing the incident.

Since the calf bore injuries, it is suspected that the calf was trapped and later killed by some miscreants.

Locals spotted the carcass on Friday morning and informed the forest officials. “The elephant calf was about four months old. The carcass was recovered near a pond in the forest. It is suspected that it died one or two days back,” said DFO Sanjay Swain told the media on Friday.

He mentioned about wound marks near the neck of the calf. “It is too early to say whether the cut was due to some trap or some other reason. Further investigation in connection with the incident is underway,” he added.
