Bhubaneswar: Chief spokesperson on COVID-19 Subroto Bagchi on Wednesday attributed deaths of at least six patients in the state to alleged negligence on the part of their family members.

Briefing the media, he said that 17 persons have succumbed to the virus in Odisha. Nine (50 per cent) among them were above 60-years while 11 had comorbidities. “Some senior citizens didn’t have travel history and didn’t step out, still they contracted the virus and died because their family members didn’t take necessary precautions,” he said.

While those young were cured but the elderly family members whom they had infected could not recover. “This is unfortunate,” he added.

Bagchi further said elderly people (above 60 years age) are at higher risk and even if they recover from COVID-19, the infection leaves their lungs permanently damaged and therefore, they need greater care.

Elaborating on the precaution to be taken to ensure their safety, Bagchi said it is important to wear a mask and sanitise hands before attending to them. Their crutches, walking sticks, wheeler chair and mobile phones should be disinfected regularly. “Avoid taking them to hospital for health check-ups that can be avoided. Air and train travelling is a strict no for them. Inform 104 if they show any symptoms of COVID-19,” he added.
