Malkangiri: Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marandi on Tuesday said as many as 933 villages in Malkangiri districts have been affected by heavy rain in the past few days.
The minister said this after an aerial survey of the rain-hit areas with the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena followed by a review meeting with Malkangiri district officials.
Marandi informed that incessant showers have destroyed crops in 1971 hectares of agriculture land and damaged 321 houses.
He said the district collector has been asked to submit a report on the damage within a week. The state government will pay compensation to the affected farmers and people within 48 hours of receiving the report, he added.
Meanwhile, heavy rain in the district has triggered flood situation due to the swelling of Sileru and Saberi rivers. As a result, six villages—Puruna Motu, Binayakpur, Alama, Peta, Muraliguda and Jilenguda—in Motu tehsil are marooned.
The flood situation in Motu tehsil is likely to be more alarming due to the steady rise in the water level of the Godavari river.
Besides, floodwaters were flowing at a height of around 7 feet at Mugi point near the district border.
