Mumbai: Former India cricketers Chetan Sharma, Maninder Singh and Shiv Sunder Das have applied for the vacant posts in the selection committee of BCCI from their respective zones.
Ajit Agarkar, who has 231 international matches to his credit, is expected to be the front-runner for the chairman’s post.
Besides pacer Chetan Sharma, former left-arm spinner Maninder Singh has applied from North Zone. While Sharma, the hat-trick man in a World Cup (1987), has appeared at 88 international games, Singh has played 94 games for the country.
The selection for East Zone is going to be difficult as there are not too many international cricketers from the zone. Das, a dogged opener and world class close-in fielder with 1326 runs in 23 Tests, is a clear favourite from East Zone. His state-mate and former pacer Debasish Mohanty is in the junior panel.
Though the BCCI has officially got rid of the zonal system, it is unlikely that two people from the same zone will be kept in two selection panels.
